The Institution for Coastal and Hinterland Community Development (LePMIL) was founded in 1997 by social activists and scholars. LePMIL was established driven by concerns that coastal and rural communities belong to the most vulnerable and are affected by underdevelopment in education, health, the economy and politics. LePMIL focuses on coastal and inland areas in regions of the Southeast Sulawesi province where the exploitation of natural resources continues to occur and has resulted in deforestation and environmental degradation that threatens livelihoods.
LePMIL, in accordance with its mandate, is made up of mediators and facilitators. They are focused on increasing the capacity of community organisations in coastal and inland regions through research, education and training which is expected to increase the capacity of communities to access development policy. LePMIL’s advocacy focus is on natural resource management, indigenous rights, women’s rights, the right to live healthily, mitigation of disaster and climate change, and good governance. read more...
